Taxes and Tax Cuts

I want to smack both Dubya and Nancy Pelosi.

First, Dubya. He has the unmitigated gall to call Democrats the "party of big spending". After he gave away the fucking treasury to tax cuts for the rich, tax breaks for big business (especially oil), and keeps financing Pee-Wee's Big Iraqi Adventure off the books.

Second, Pelosi, for asserting that Democrats "love tax cuts". That's goddamn pandering.

News flash to both of you, although Dubya will never get it because he's a coddled swine child of aristocrat wannabes: The purpose of taxes is to pay for government. Government is We The People doing collectively what we cannot do individually. Far from being a bad thing, taxes are actually a very good thing, if used wisely and assessed fairly.

Taxes pay for, among many other things, military defense, diplomatic efforts, road repair, police and fire protection, testing water, food, and drugs to make sure they're safe to consume, environmental regulation and pollution control, fair labor practices, our legal system, lotsa stuff... not for profit. Elimination of the profit motive is, in fact, one of the biggest advantages of the whole system. Just think, to take an example not at random, of how much it might cost you just to have 24/7 private police protection.

We need a vastly simplified tax code because the code we have now is out of control and almost unfathomable.

We need reconsiderations of who and what are taxed, not more frickin' cuts.

Rich people should pay more than poor people. Why? Two reasons: They have more, and therefore can help more without endangering themselves; and, by generally consuming more, poorer people help drive the economy itself, making it possible for rich people to become rich. Circle-of-Life thing. I am not in any way in favor of taxing rich people into the poorhouse... Getting rich is just fine, as long as you don't hurt anyone or anything while doing so. But as someone, I think it was Warren Buffett, pointed out, if you tax two people at 40% -- one making $1,000,000 a year and one making $20,000 a year -- the one guy will still be rich, and the other guy will be barely above the official government poverty line.

And we need a government that has a half a chance of using the money collected from taxes in ways that will actually help We The People.

I'm not in favor of tax cuts. I'm in favor of responsible taxation, and using taxes responsibly.

Pelosi just wants to get votes.

And Dubya just wants to get richer.
