Sorry I haven't updated here for, jeez, almost two weeks. I'm fine, just spending most of my social time on Facebook. I'll post more often here, I promise.

Meantime, how is everybody? Get through the storms yesterday okay? Everything on track for a decent Thanksgiving?

Which facebook page? I see two listed there but neither seem to have anything going on.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:06 pm (UTC)

This one: https://www.facebook.com/filkertom . I also have to start seriously using the musician page, https://www.facebook.com/tomsmithonline . Those are the only two I've set up -- what else are you seeing?

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:11 pm (UTC)

The latest entry I see on tomsmithonline is from March 27 where you shared a link. But I'm not a FB member so what I can see is limited.

Doing good. Looking forward to the Doctor Who 50th this weekend. Did you see the mini episode online?

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:06 pm (UTC)

I did. It was awesome. :D

Mon, Nov. 18th, 2013 08:50 pm (UTC)

Busy at work. Survived the storm with only a few brownouts last night.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:07 pm (UTC)

Yeah, I had a couple of light flickers, but it mostly seemed to miss us.

Thu, Nov. 21st, 2013 12:36 am (UTC)

And the last of the storm-disabled traffic lights was working again this afternoon, and the last two of my coworkers without power should be back up soon (one tonight, one by Friday).

Blissfully ignorant of the storms since they were somewhere else.

Had a recital this past Sunday as part of the bass lessons I'm taking. I used Vixy and Tony's cover of "Rich Fantasy Lives" because I really wanted to get that song out to an audience that might not have heard it yet. =)

Gearing up for BoardGameGeekCon this week - yaaaaay!

Awesome, and awesome!

Mon, Nov. 18th, 2013 09:30 pm (UTC)

My neighborhood lost power last night, but it's back on now. The refrigerator/freezer stayed cold enough that I don't have to throw away any food, hurrah!

I'm surprised that there are no fallen branches along my street. Maybe the derecho that blew through here a few years ago took out anything that could be blown down.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:08 pm (UTC)

Oh, I've never had to toss food because of a power outage. Nope nope nope. Actually, I have to seriously defrost my "new" fridge, as it's not a frost-free model, and it stays INTENSELY cold. I've got three inches of glacier at the top right now.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 03:10 pm (UTC)

I have an irrational dislike of defrosting freezers. 95% of the work is basically waiting for the ice to melt, but it seems like So.Much.Work.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 07:02 pm (UTC)

My parents have an upright freezer that I wish they'd defrost. Myself, I have a chest freezer in the garage that's been unused so long I have to wonder if it's still working.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 07:02 pm (UTC)

One thing I've learned is that if you keep your freezer packed with cold stuff, it will lose heat at a slower rate. I've filled up plastic 2-liter soda bottles with water (after drinking the soda of course) and put them in the freezer. The added mass not only keeps the cold in but during those humid summer nights, you put one in your bedroom in a bowl and let it be a dehumidifier.

I haven't tried the same idea with the fridge though, I'm not sure how much weight the shelves can handle.

ETA when I lost power last year for 48 hours, the freezer did thaw, but it was still cold enough to keep me from having to throw anything out.

I've heard that keeping the freezer and the fridge full makes it more efficient to keep things cool. It makes sense: the cold stuff will cool more slowly than empty air, so the unit doesn't have to run as often.

Yep, I live in Chicagoland so we know about the lake affect. A huge body of water is slow to heat and cool so at parts of the year it's a degree or two more or less than the burbs directly west of it.

My Thanksgiving plans: turkey sandwich from 7-11 and the new Starkid musical on YouTube.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:09 pm (UTC)

Not a bad thing. While I'm going over to Leslie's for Thanksgivukkah, I'm also planning to pick up a turkey breast and cook it in the Crock Pot for myself.

Mon, Nov. 18th, 2013 09:41 pm (UTC)

Three inches or so of rain, but I managed to dodge most of it.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:10 pm (UTC)

Yeah, we got about an inch and a half here, but my mobile home park actually has very good drainage.

The remnants of the storms rumbled through here very fast around 5 am, though I think there was a bit of damage. (There is a hole in the upper deck of the GWB - gotta wonder if the storm was the straw that broke the camel's back, though.)

Week looks to be busy. Both professionally and personally am gearing up for the arrival on the same day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving. Google "menurkey" to see something at once charming and absurd.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:12 pm (UTC)

Sorry for the damage, however slight.

The menurkey is indeed both charming and absurd. :)

Hugs to you and Batya!

Good to see you back, at least for a bit!

Didn't encounter much weather here in the South, other than misty rain on my drive back from Aiken yesterday afternoon/evening.

Will be traveling again to the Philly area for Two-Days-Past-Turkey Day. Why my family decided to have Thanksgiving on Saturday is beyond me, but I don't care. I'm not doing a show that weekend this year, so I can go! Next year, well, I'd like to be making money, so we'll see.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:16 pm (UTC)

I'll tell you this: The trip out west was utterly revealing, in that the weather was pretty much exactly the same from the point when I got to Phoenix, a couple of days after FenCon, to when I left Phoenix, two days after ConChord. I mean, constant temperatures and humidity and wind, for two solid weeks. It was almost disconcerting.

Good luck with the Saturday thing. They probably just wanted extra time to cook, or to Black Friday shop, or maybe somebody had to work Thursday or Friday....

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 02:03 pm (UTC)

I'm not really fussing about the Saturday thing - it might be an adjustment now that *her* son is married (the last one of our family), my Aunt is willing to make adjustments to the calendar. It will make the trip up easier, as trying to get around cities the day before T-Day is very difficult.

These days I"m traveling from Chapel Hill, so that means I have to deal with a little bit of Durham, Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Delaware (Wilmington can be bypassed, but there's a toll when you enter the state on I95. Can be a big slowdown) and Philly, to get out to my Aunt's place, NW of the city. There are alternate routes, but they have their own issues and bottlenecks.

Driving on Black Friday has been easier for me in the past than the Wednesday before.

Mon, Nov. 18th, 2013 10:03 pm (UTC)

Let's see...

Trip to DC for brother's wedding reception went well. I respect my Dad's ability to drive for hours sans radio and minimal conversation, but wish he wasn't so aggressive. And if he thinks I'll ever let him drive my car he's crazy.

Took my car in for a pre-Thanksgiving check and it was good that I did. Coolant mixed with engine oil, brake fluid really dirty, and a braking light out. All wear and tear on the car. Expensive but pay now or pay more later. I can finance it though.

Neighbor got drunk and backed his work truck off the parking lot and into those posts for phone/cable. Posts are OK if at a bad angle and it took another truck to get his out of the mud. Later he backed it off the other side of the parking lot into the grass. I'm starting not to like him.

At work one tech guy left on Friday. The other is leaving for 3 weeks (medical leave) on Black Friday so now we're rushing to hire replacements and bring them up to speed AND finish a major project.

T-Day plans so far are going OK. I tested my dip at work today and got a lot of positive feedback. Looking forward to my first Chambanacon and hope they'll clear the roads by Black Friday.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 01:18 pm (UTC)

Aiee on the car. Gotta have mine looked at as well. Also Aiee on the neighbor and the people leaving work. Yay on the dip, and you'll love 'Bana -- it's as tiny and relaxing as they come!

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 05:12 pm (UTC)

Well I'm not sure what goes on at a relaxacon. I haven't been to one before. I do want to make new friends and start a new Thanksgiving tradition. Hmmm maybe I can make a double batch of the dip next week and save one for the con.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 11:48 pm (UTC)

Well, a relaxacon is basically... very little programming. Hang out, filk, browse the small dealer's room, shmooze with people. I think there's only one official panel, the Never Ending Filk Panel.

Wed, Nov. 20th, 2013 12:39 am (UTC)

I prefer a bit of structure or else I tend to do nothing. But I need to leave my comfort zone and hanging out and shmoozing with people sounds like fun. I plan on bringing a few easy games too. It should be fun.

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 06:22 pm (UTC)

Tired and behind on things (which seems to be the norm), but otherwise well. You?

Tue, Nov. 19th, 2013 11:47 pm (UTC)

About the same, but workin' on it. :) Hugs!

Wed, Nov. 20th, 2013 05:25 am (UTC)

Made it through fine, but my TV got wrecked by a lightning strike. Bah.

Thu, Nov. 21st, 2013 02:19 pm (UTC)

Doing well. :) Work is slowly progressing on my writing project, and I'm getting back into World of Warcraft, Diablo III and Starcraft II so game wise I seem to be pretty good.

Though the consoles can bite me. Seriously, not one friggin' game hardly this generation that I care about. (Enough with the FPS games already, get some old school RPGs out there will ya?)

Anyway I also have a new little plush companion here in the computer room with me, I rather like him. :) He's a baby Murloc, Murk-Eye. :) what? I like Murlocs.

But yeah things are good.
